Dr. Chioma Udemgba received a bachelor's in physics from the University of Mississippi as a member of the Sally McDonald Barksdale Honors College. After graduation, she went on to receive her medical degree from Duke University, followed by a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. At Tulane, she groomed her interests in graduate medical education, health disparities, and DEI work while caring for marginalized patients in an under-resourced community. She graduated from Tulane as Chief Resident with distinctions in Medical Education and Program Administration & Leadership.
She then took her passion for caring for patients with complex medical conditions and experiences in health disparities and programmatic leadership to the NIH where she completed a clinical fellowship in Allergy and Immunology within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. While in fellowship,
she authored several peer-reviewed papers and led interactive courses that advanced insights and provided usable tools related to DEI within the specialty. She continued these efforts in addition to leading several, novel immunogenetic research studies and serving as president of the Network of African American Fellows at the NIH, designing events and sessions to improve the sense of community and belonging amongst African Americans at the NIH.
In line with her commitment to health equity, she is now leading the development of an equity-focused Allergy clinic and community-focused programs that marry efforts to address social needs and treat medical issues for patients in San Antonio, Texas for the University Health System. This is in addition to her work on the DEI Committee for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology developing, leading, and supporting programming to help expand the range of providers who care for our most vulnerable and deserving patients with allergic and immunologic disorders. She’s a dedicated advocate for designing and promoting efforts that address issues concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion within the healthcare system as it relates not only to medical providers, trainees, and researchers, but the patients they serve.
