First Year of Cannon Motors Two Man Scramble a Success for Scholarship Endowment
June 21-22, 2014 marked the first year of the Cannon Motors Two Man Scramble benefiting the LOU Ole Miss Club Scholarship Endowment. Each year the club awards a $500 scholarship to one graduating senior from Oxford High School and one graduating senior from Lafayette High School who will attend Ole Miss in the fall.
The two-day tournament was held at the Ole Miss Golf Course complete with a Calcutta dinner. Players enjoyed two rounds of golf, two tickets to the dinner and cash prizes to first, second and third place winners of each flight.
This year’s scramble raised more than $11,000 for the endowment, and proceeds benefit scholarships given to local youth.
“It went great,” said Gant Boone (BBA 09), chairman for the LOU Ole Miss Club golf tournament. “We had 49 teams, which I thought was really good for our first year. We were in Omaha for the CWS at the same time so that probably hurt participation some. Everybody was really happy with the way things were run and made a point to come up to one of our board members and say they’d definitely be back next year.”
While the numbers for the inaugural tournament were high, the club hopes to see those numbers increase in the coming years to better serve the students of Oxford and Lafayette County.
“Our goal every year is to increase our endowment, so we can give more scholarship money to seniors from Oxford and Lafayette,” said Peter Ross (BSPH 02, PHMD 04), LOU Ole Miss Club president. “The more money we raise the more money there is available to local kids for scholarship reasons and financial aid. We are up to two $500 scholarships, and our goal for this upcoming year is to give away four $500 scholarships. It’s important that local kids are given the opportunity to go to Ole Miss and have some money available to help with all of the costs.”
The Lafayette-Oxford-University Ole Miss Club’s mission is to better Oxford and Lafayette County by providing scholarships to the deserving youth of Oxford and Lafayette County High Schools.
The club is open to anyone that loves Ole Miss. For more information on the LOU Ole Miss Club and the scholarship endowment email LOUOleMissClub@yahoo.com or visit www.facebook.com/LOUolemissalumniclub.
